Finally our 4th house reveal is posted! Jeey! As you’ve already understood, this time we’ll reveal the bedroom in our basement apartment. We’ll take you through the building process. And the final decorating process. The post includes photos from before, every step of the way and after. Check it out!
Start Out Look
This was what we started out with. Or, actually here we’ve already started taking up the concrete floor. We didn’t really take any good before photos. But this room was originally the whole width of our house. We decided to put up a wall in the middle of it. The wall came more or less where you see we’ve started taken up the floor.
We wanted to keep the left side as a workshop as it was. We needed a place to store tools and be able to work in shitty weather.
And then we wanted to convert the wright side into a bedroom connected to the apartment in the basement. All of this was quite easy since there already was a door leading into the part we wanted to use as the main bedroom. And since the workshop had its own entry from the outside, we could just put up a wall in the middle.
Installing A Window
The process of installing a window we’ve explained in more details here 7 Easy Steps: How To Install New Windows. With this particular window in the basement bedroom we had some challenges. First we installed a new window exactly the same size as the old one was. (Like the size above). We thought the escape way through the main front door and the additional bathroom exit door was more than enough to cover fire safety rules. But, it turned out that we also needed to have a big enough window to be able to exit also from the bedroom. So, we needed to install a bigger window.
Here you see the new window we installed after cutting out a piece of the concrete. This was something just needed to be done to be able to follow the rules. Once it was done we could continue.
The Building
The building process we’ve explained step by step here. In the bedroom we took up the concrete floor. We installed insulation. We laid floor heating. We poured new concrete floors. We installed a floating ceiling with a double layer of drywall. We built up new wall frames and installed insulation. We lay all new electrical. And as we mention already, we installed a new window.
When all that was done we could put up drywall. And then it was ready for plastering.
Painting
For our new main bedroom in the basement we decided to go for a dark blue colour called “Deco Blue”. First we painted one layer of primer on all walls and ceiling. Then we painted the ceiling two layers with “Classic White”. And after that the walls got two layers of the “Deco Blue”.
Floor And Mouldings
Final steps to finish our bedroom – laying floor and adding mouldings. Laminate floors are something you definitely can do yourself! It’s that easy.
Adding mouldings around the floor, and around the window and door where the last things we did to complete the bedroom.
Bedroom Décor
First we put up a really big lamp above our bed. Eventually we figured out that it was too big. Instead we installed a ceiling-lamp. And that made the room feel much more open. We reused two old nightstands that we found in the house. One on each side. And we added some modern cement-block-lamps on top of them. We also needed some storage, and therefor added a black drawer. If you wonder where the rest of our clothes are – we keep them in the second bedroom. That bedroom is much smaller and therefor we use it for storage and clothes.
In addition we had a piano that we also needed to place in the bedroom since there where no other space available for it. That means that yes, I often lay in bed listening to my man playing the piano for me! I’m one lucky girl!
For the rest we’ve used small and simple décor in the room. One mirror to make it look bigger. And some hangers for clothes on the back of the door.
End Result
Tadaaa! This is our completely finished bedroom. What do you think?
Please leave a comment and let us know. We’re at least really happy with how it turned out. And we hope that you got some inspiration to do something similar yourself. Thank you so much for reading! Until next time!
