How To Get To Lake Bled

Lake Bled is located in the Julian Alps in the Northwest part of Slovenia. The Lake is only 35 km (22 miles) from Ljubljana Airport. And 55 km (34 miles) from Ljubljana City, the capital of Slovenia. You can find flights here.

The lake is also very close to the border of Austria. If you arrive from Graz, the drive will only take you 2,5 hours.

We came by car from Portorož on the coast of Slovenia. And we used approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Basically if you’re travelling to Slovenia, Austria, North Italy or Croatia, you can easily get to Lake Bled.

Best Season To Visit

The best season to visit depends on what you prefer. Since it’s become a quite popular tourist attraction, people are visiting all year around. But, it’s still much less crowded than most European tourist destinations.

We visited in September. Which we found perfect. It was a warm and sunny day. There were lots of people, but not too much.

The lake is beautiful all seasons of the year. We also really want to go there in the winter sometime.

The Walk Around Lake Bled

So, before we arrived at Lake Bled, we’d heard that you could walk all around the lake. The entire route is around six kilometres (three miles). And we’d heard that most people do the walk in 1-1,5 hours.

Well, in total we used approximately 3 hours! Haha. That included MANY photo stops. One stop for ice cream. One stop for something to drink. And one stop for cake!

And of course, many peeing, sniffing and water stops for our dog Maxima. She actually turned one year the day we visited Lake Bled. The day started out with a special dog-made cake and lots of quality time with us. So the day was just as special for her, as it was for us. (At least thats what we as dog-parents think).

The walk around Lake Bled is accessible for everyone. Wheelchairs and strollers are no problem at all. The route is mostly made out of gravel pavement. And partly straight on the water with wooden paths. All the way around the Lake you have a beautiful view of the Bled Island. There are many stops where you can have a bite. Drink something. Or just lay on the grass relaxing. You can rent kayaks or small boats, and go out on the water. Or join one of the bigger boats taking you to the Bled Island. When we visited, it was so warm that many people went for a swim in the Lake as well.

Bled Cream Cake

Do you love cake? You just HAVE TO try out the Bled Cream Cake once you visit Bled. We LOVED it. And can’t wait to go back here to try it again. They are sold at numerous places as you walk around the lake. And also in Bled centrum. So, don’t worry. You’ll find a place that sells it once you’re there.

The Big Question: Is It Worth It?

The idea was that we should stop at Lake Bled on our way from Portorož in Slovenia to Salzburg in Austria. Since it was on the route that was convenient. We should walk around the Lake. Have some food. And then continued driving to our destination in Austria. But, our “short stop” at Lake Bled this sunny day ended up being quite much longer than planned.

The beautiful weather. The nice temperature. The unbelievable tasty Bled Cream Cake. And the stunning view as we walked around the lake, made it SO WORTH IT! We recommend everyone to stop by Lake Bled if you ever visit Slovenia. We regret to this day that we didn’t plan for more time in Bled. We liked it so much that we wish we’d spent a few days here. One thing is for sure, we’ll go back to Bled sometime in the future! Check out the Grand Hotel Toplice – Sava Hotels & Resorts for instance.

Actually, our whole week in Slovenia convinced us that we have to go back. We’ll soon write a whole post about Slovenia and all the things you can do there. Our all in all impression: What a great country!
