23 Mind-blowing Hours In Cape Town: Here’s What You Absolutely Must Do

Travelling isn’t actually an option right now. And most likely not in the upcoming future. But, we travellers can not stop dreaming! Are you squirming in your seat wanting to explore more of the world? Then read this post about Cape Town to ease your mind. I (Jeanette) worked in South Africa a few months in 2018/2019, and therefor I was lucky enough to get a 23 hour long stop-over in Cape Town. I made sure that I used those hours well. And will for sure go back there! Have you ever had such a short stop in a new city somewhere in the world? There’ll come a day when everything is back to normal in the world. Maybe not completely the way it was, but for sure we’ll be able to travel the world again. So, sit back. Relax. And let your mind wonder to wonderful places while reading further.

How To Get There

You can get to Cape Town from everywhere. Amsterdam-Cape Town with KLM would be my best suggestion from Europe. Check out flights here. The flight time from Europe is around 11 hours. Do you enjoy flying just like me? I don’t find it any problem with long flights. I catch up on movies, blog posts and sleep. And suddenly we arrive! Haha. Normally I never have time to sit still so long. So I really feel completely relaxed when I know I have to sit there for so many hours.

Cape Town Stop-Over

All the things I’ll mention bellow is something you’ll manage to do even if you only plan for a short stop-over in Cape Town. It’s a great way to see this beautiful city. And to combine it with travelling somewhere else is a great way to see several places in one go. Of course you can also do all of these things if you plan to stay longer in the city. Either way, Cape Town should be on your to-do-list! What do you think of my photos? The light in Cape Town was amazing!

Where To Live

Live as central as possible. I lived in the Southern Sun Waterfront Cape Town hotel. Arranged by my company. And the location was great! It was just a short walk away from the Waterfront. We were advised to be cautious and don’t walk alone. Even though the Waterfront area seemed just like a European city. We walked in groups both day and night.

What To Do:

Bellow I’ll tell you what you absolutely must do when you visit Cape Town. Most of the things I got to do last time. Some of the things I really, really, really want do to next time. And ALL of the things I’d want to do again!

Table Mountain

One thing I regret when I visited Cape Town was that I didn’t go to the top of Table Mountain. You can get there with a cable-car. Check out tickets here. I was supposed to go there in the early morning the day after I arrived. But, I was so tired that I decided not to go. That’s not typical me at all! But, that particular day I didn’t have the energy. I did however, see the beautiful view of this flat topped mountain from sea, which was also great. But, next time I visit Cape Town, it’ll be on the top of my priority list for sure. Do you wish to visit this extraordinary mountain?

Bus-Tour

One thing I did, and something I’ll for sure do next time as well, is to buy a bus tour ticket here. You’ll be able to hop-on and hop-off when ever you want. And this way, you get to see a great deal of the city. This ticket allows you access to all 4 bus tour loops: the Red City tour to Table Mountains Cableway, the Yellow Downtown tour, The Blue Mini Peninsula tour and The Purple Constantia Valley Wine tour, access one free walking tour and a harbour cruise. The views are STUNNING! For a from price of just £ 15, it’s so, so worth it!

Wine tasting

As part of the The Purple Constantia Valley Wine tour you can get off at several Wine estates. Now I’m not an expert in this field, but in my opinion – the South African wine tastes soooo good! I learned that South Africa keeps all it’s best wine for them selves. So what you can buy of South African wine in the rest of the world, is never the best products. I have no idea if this is true. Do you have a clue? Anyhow, I really loved the South African wine! And wine tasting is never a bad idea. Check out this Winelands ebike tour for a more active way of tasting wine! Or this one where you get a chance to visit the three wine farms Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. They are all prestigious, award-winning wine farms!

Beach

The temperature in Cape Town was great both when I visited in December, and in February. When we have winter in Europe, they have summer. Which makes it ideal to go there in our winter months. There are many beaches in Cape Town. And to soak up the sun and relax I recommend you to go to one of these; Camps Bay, Noordhoek, Melkbosstrand, Bloubergstrand, Tableview, Fish Hoek, Hout Bay, Muizenberg. The one in the picture above is the Fish Hoek Beach. Fun fact; Afrikaans is a daughter language of Dutch. So I could understand a bit of what the locals where saying! Small things like this makes me happy.

Whale Safari

Last but not least, the number one must-do when ever you visit Cape Town! Go on a whale safari! To see wild whales like this is just indescribable. So close. So scary. And so beautiful. I was lucky enough to get some time off from my shift, and was able to go out on one of our boats with some of my colleagues. I was driving. With the beautiful view of Cape Town in the background. Never in a million years had I pictured my self driving a boat on my own going up close to such beautiful creatures. It’s really a mind-blowing thing to have seen. Now keep in mind that I’m a certified officer and therefore could go out on a boat on my own. Most of you, should go on organised trips to be able to see whales. Do you want to book a whale safari? Or check whats available? Check this trip out.

Would you like to take a stop-over in Cape Town now? Or even go there for a longer period? We certainly hope so! Let’s cross our fingers and hope that the world soon let’s us explore more of it <3
